“Teacher’s Pet”
When I was a child, having my artwork chosen for display by the teacher was one of my favorite things at school, almost as good as recess.
Recognition is one of many important ways that teachers foster positive growth in their students. For young artists this especially meaningful because the moment when an artwork moves from the desk to the bulletin board, or later, from the studio to an exhibition, marks a significant transition from the private to the pubic realm. This is a fertile period of learning throughout the life of an artist.
Artists who teach engage with their students on levels that reach beyond assignments and assessments. They forge interpersonal relationships where the mysterious alchemy of deeper learning in art occurs, often in reciprocal ways. This mentorship has long been a powerful element in the growth of many artists.
Each of the “fine arts” faculty artists in Art School {Dismissed} have been invited to select an exceptional student (or two) for inclusion in “Teacher’s Pet”, an emerging artists salon. These dynamic young artists are at different stages of their education, ranging from first Year College and University to recent graduates of BFA and post-graduate programs.
