I have just returned from a week of teaching grades 1 through 12 in Goose Bay Labrador. My method is to first demonstrate some, entertaining and evocative, original pieces. All the grades respond very positively. Video of the type of these out-of-the-box music pieces with theatrical elements can be seen at youtube searching on ‘Rick Sacks’. After the demonstration I engage the students in a show and tell, handing out instruments and found sounds that they have never seen before. In the last half of the sessions we are creating our own sound track, usually to a ‘made-up’ story along the lines of a Tim Burton animated film.

My appearance at the Givens Shaw project entails my ‘wearing’ a wooden frame recognized as a boat. With bird calls, bells, wind and surf sounds all acoustically made I make my journey around the school.
