Phil and Laurel have been working together – and independently – on music and art since 1993. Phil’s primary focus is in sound design, composition and technology while Laurel – also a composer – explores vocal performance and visual media. Together they have worked on music composition and album recordings as well as sound and music production for film, dance, theatre and art installation. Heather Nicol recruited Phil for the technical design of her installation Imminent Departure at Union Station, Nuit Blanche 2009, and John Oswald sought Laurel and Phil’s partnership in creating his permanent 35 channel installation A Time To Hear For Hear for the Royal Ontario Museum. Laurel recently received a commission from Nuit Blanche 2010 to develop XXIX, a video component for this installation. Phil’s teaching practice is as a freelance lecturer on film sound and he has taught the sound-for-film course at The Audio Recording Academy since 2003 – currently guiding twelve soundtrack students through a complete treatment for a new feature film, Sight Unseen, by Toronto director Ross Turnbull. Phil and Laurel collaboratively design their own multi-channel audiovisual works and performances of which Standing Wave is the latest.
