I teach the way I learn and that is by experiencing and motivation. My design and art practices are a mix of conceptual considerations, play and paying attention to what I pay attention to. My artistic direction is structured, but often full of segues, spontaneity and contradiction. Similarly my class environment is unhierarchical and full of variety and spirited production and discussion.
Jay Albert Nandini Drew Mark Emma Jesse Cynthia Manoj Matt Angela Shelley Howard Kathleen Chris Heather Brent Katherine Laura Gwen Neil Mallory Lilyan Matthieu Edith Martyna Moira, 2010 embodies my art, design and teaching philosophies. Initially conceived to reach up and symbolically touch a communicative light fixture at the Shaw School, the tower has been constructed with the help of many friends, partners, students and artists, the community of which makes up the name of the piece.
I teach Design in the Art and Art History Program in the joint program between Sheridan College and University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM).
