Barbara Balfour

Barbara Balfour is a Toronto-based artist who has exhibited prints, multiples, and installations. An Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at York University in Toronto, she teaches theory and print-based studio courses. Her current research deals with artists’ writing, within and parallel to art production. Some of her prior research relates to notions of selfishness, reproducibility, and mortality.

Barbara has been a member of two artist collectives, Spontaneous Combustion (Toronto) and Venus Fly Trap (Montreal). In the field of professional printing, she has worked for artists such as Leon Golub and Komar and Melamid. She is a Lifetime Member of Art Metropole. Upcoming solo exhibitions include Living & Dying (YYZ) and méthode champenoise (York Quay Gallery Project Room), both in Toronto, Fall 2010. Upcoming curatorial projects include In the Stacks (*QueenSpecific), Printapalooza (Gales Gallery, York University), and Printing Errors (akau), all in Toronto, Fall 2010.

Since she entered kindergarten, there may have been only one year when Barbara was neither a student nor a teacher. She considers teaching one of her most performative activities. She has been fortunate in teaching some students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; many of these former students are now colleagues and friends.
